Rangiroa is located in the Tuamotu Islands and is the largest atoll in the Southern Hemisphere and the second largest atoll in the world.Rangiroa is famous for its diving because of the big lagoons the island has. It is about a one hour flight from Papeete to Rangiroa. Rangiroa is the administrative center of the Northern Tuamotu atolls.

Rangiroa, also known as Rairoa means "long sky". The atoll is surrounded by a coral ring and more than 240 motu islets that are separated by a large number of shallow channels and three passes. The 2 larger passes are wide enough and deep enough for ships to enter the lagoon.

There are two villages on the atoll of Rangiroa. The main village of Avatoru is located on the North West side of the atoll and Tiputa is found on the Eastern end of the motu. The population of Rangiroa is about 1400 residents.

Rangiroa's world famous lagoon is over 45 miles long and 16 miles wide and divers come from all over the world to visit some of the most spectacular underwater scenery on earth. The lagoon has the warmest and clearest water that divers dream of. Favorite excursions include "shooting the pass" where hundreds of varieties of fish, eels and sharks swim past you, swept along by the strong currents.

Most visitors who come to Rangiroa come for the scuba diving but it is also a place of unsurpassed beauty and tranquility.
