Huahine Island - Huahine Island Attractions - Tahiti Cruise Vacation
Like Tahaa, Huahine is one of the lesser-visited islands in the South Pacific and houses approximately 5000 inhabitants and is considered to be one of the most important islands for Polynesian history.

Captain James Cook was the first to discover Huahine in 1769. From Huahine, the islands of Bora Bora, Raitea and Taha'a are all visible.

Huanine is located 110 miles northwest of Tahiti and is 28 square miles. Like Tahiti, Huahine is made up of two connected islands - Huahine Nui (big Huahine) and Huahine Iti (little Huahine). A bridge connects the two islands.

Legend claims that the islands were once connected and that they were split when a great warrior and god of thieves (Hiro) sliced his canoe through the island. A scenic road (mostly non-paved) travels along the edges of the islands and offers breathtaking views.

The islands share a common barrier reef. Offshore motus (islets) within the reef grow varieties of melon in the white sand. These areas provide an idyllic spot for a picnic and snorkeling. All around the islands you will see vanilla, coffee and taro plants growing in abundance as the soil on this island is very rich and fertile.

The lethargic town of Fare manages to maintain the flavor of old era French Polynesia but comes to life when the various boats arrive with produce. The locals mingle along the waterfront and enjoy the outdoor market.

Huahine attractions include a famous water activity show in its beautiful natural setting, lagoon trips, fauna and underwater exploration (reef drop-offs, caves full of fish, coral gardens) sunset cruises, deep sea fishing and surfing on the best waves in the French Polynesia.

The historical town of Maeva is a former royal village. The town houses many fascinating archaeological objects as well as restored sacred temples (Marae). A nearby lake still has working stone fish traps.

Throughout the island views of natural bays and seascapes abound. Streams rush down the mountainsides and gather into pools where fresh water shrimp can be found.

Huahine is sure to cast a magical spell on all who visit this enchanting island.
